I imagine the Windows and Xbox versions run in a similar fashion. And when a friend wants to play the game, they can join as long as a player is listed online through Steam. The single player experience is great because it allows a lot of freedom. Once a player has completed the tutorial, they should know the basics, however, accessing items like the research catalogue can be found in the menu or by clicking on it from your backpack. And in Astroneer, the terrain manipulation is akin to that of the Sims. The way players manipulate terrain reminded me of The Sims 2 because players artificially created basements by lowering the terrain. In it, players are able to manipulate the terrain with ease, allowing them to dig into and out of cave systems. I started by playing through the simplistic tutorial. Astroneer is truly a relaxing and fantastic game to play. It pulls you in by provoking a sense of wonder and awe while traversing planets freely, without creatures lurking in the shadows. It's open world which lets players get lost in the vast caves and it brings a smile to your face as you discover new items or planets. So far, so good.Īt the beginning of my playthrough with Astroneer, I found the game to be charming. In the 70+ hours I've played, I've not encountered alien species with the exception of hostile plant life. It is a game that has some amazing music, a nice graphical aesthetic, and is fun to discover the many ways to die.

For example, there’s a ‘wide mod’ which extends your mining area so you can terraform in quicker succession.Created by System Era Softworks, Astroneer is an open world survival game where the players must farm materials, build bases, and discover the purpose behind the alien structures.
ASTRONEER REVIEW MODS
They may look intriguing but are best avoided!Īstoneer can craft mods to make exploration easier. We learned this the hard way! Astroneer can die from suffocation and poisonous gas from hostile plants. These connect to your home base or vehicle and ensure you have enough oxygen to continue your journey. The key thing to remember when exploring is to use tethers.
ASTRONEER REVIEW UPGRADE
It feels like a mini Science lesson! Upgrade your vehicle with various items across the planets I must admit, it’s been fun learning what materials compliment others. When you collect ores, you can smelt them into modules to be used in crafting. You can craft a range of vehicles and spacecraft to explore the world. Sadly you can only play with others who have the game, not couch co-op. It’s worth noting though that the current co-op isn’t local play. Rumours are that 8-player support and dedicated servers are on their way. Co-op can be played with up to 4 players. The game can be played single player and co-op. They have different gases and a main primary and secondary resource. Planets are rated by difficulty, sun and wind. There are currently 7 planets to explore, all offering different resources and collectibles.

You play as an astronaut (called Astroneer) and free-roam planets by foot, lunar rover, or spacecraft.

Version 1.0 was subsequently released on 6th February 2019. The game was released for early access back in December 2016. GameplayĪstroneer is a sandbox adventure survival game, but it does things differently. Secondly, I’ve found myself spending hours watching my clever teen discovering planets and building spaceships.
ASTRONEER REVIEW FOR FREE
Firstly, Astroneer is available to download for free on the Xbox game pass (win). I was pleasantly surprised on a number of levels. Some of the Astroneer planets are truly beautiful! As young teens ‘demand’, I thought this was another fad that we’d have to fork out for, only to find it’s a disappointment. When my step Son came to stay this weekend, he said “we have to get this new game called Astroneer”.
